Holidays in Lazise on Lake Garda
One of the most popular destinations on Lake Garda is Lazise, a beautiful location south-east of Lake Garda and a very popular and lively tourist destination. The pedestrian area of the historic center has preserved the buildings, gates and towers of the city, leaving the charm of the ancient port city intact.
The city center is made up of narrow streets, alleys and squares that lead to the lakeside promenade and the beach where the boats are moored.
From a military port to a holiday destination, with the frenzy of cafes, people in souvenir shops and local products, it is difficult to imagine Lazise in a different way. However, the history of the country has very ancient roots. Archaeological finds demonstrate that the area was already inhabited in Roman times and that in the Middle Ages Lazise was a rich commercial center with a castle.
In 1439 the city was targeted by the troops of Filippo Maria Visconti, at war with the Republic of Venice, but after this short period of war, peace prospered, at least until the events of the War of the League of Cambrai, during which a Venetian galley sank to avoid being taken over by the enemy in front of Lazise, which passed into the hands of Giovanni Gonzaga on 23 August 1510.
Within the city and port of Lazise
In the historic districts of Lazise you can admire ancient Venetian buildings, grouped mainly around the lagoon. Numerous restaurants and typical trattorias enliven the centre. Behind the city gate is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, paved with white and pink marble. The shopping street is Corso Ospedale. To admire the city walls, we recommend walking along Via Rocca, between the east and south gates. Here you can get away from the traffic and confusion.
Arsenal of Venice, also known as the arsenal of the Serenissima Republic, the ancient customs house of Venice
In the 14th century, the large stone and cobbled building was used by the Venetian fleet as an arsenal. Later, the building was used as a warehouse and customs house. Today the house has been renovated and used as a venue for events and exhibitions.
The churches of Lazise sul Garda: San Martino and San Nicolò
Among the most important religious buildings in Lazise is the large church of San Martino, with a single nave, which is located towards the eastern gate of the town and houses altars and floors in precious white and red marble. Further on, towards the port, there is the Romanesque church of San Nicolò, dating back to the 12th century. The church has a small bell tower, the external wall is frescoed with a Byzantine Madonna. Inside you can admire frescoes.
Scaligero Castle of Lazise on Lake Garda
The Scaligero Castle is located near the southern gate; like the nearby Villa Bernini, this property is private and therefore closed to visitors. The imposing castle with six towers and crenellated alleys was renovated in the 13th century by the Scaligeri family, but has much older origins. A beautiful park surrounds the castle.
