The Old Churches of Vicenza: S. Stefano
The first reliable mention of the church appears in a bull issued by Pope Urban III in 1186 , addressed to Bishop Pastore of Vicenza. The chapel of S. Stefano was one of the seven city chapels , each led by a chaplain under the authority of the cathedral chapter. In 1459 , the church—by then severely dilapidated—was demolished , and all the artworks it contained were lost. A new church was built on the same site, soon enriched with side chapels thanks in part to bequests

18th-Century Vicenza Culture: Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi
The 18th century in Vicenza produced scholars capable of transforming architecture into an instrument of interpretation and memory. Among them, Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi stands out as one of the most refined figures of the period. He was born in 1719 into a modest family; his father worked as a barber, and the young Ottavio initially faced a future far from noble patronage or academic studies. His path shifted thanks to the interest of Marquis Capra , who recognized in him a

The Lion of St. Mark in Vicenza
In 1404 a delegation of Vicentini, led by Giampiero De Proti, signed in Venice the dedication of our city to the Serenissima. The first Venetian mayor, Michiel, exhibited the symbol of Venice in Vicenza: the bas-relief with the winged lion of St. Mark was placed on the Bissara tower in 1406. A column was then raised in the square with the plan to hoist another lion on top. Clearly visible and majestic. It was placed up there in 1473 and remained there until 1509. In that year

Corte dei Roda Contrà S. Andrea
Corte dei Roda Contrà S. Andrea, so called due to the existence in medieval times of a small church dedicated to the saint. Someone wrote that above a garage in the street there remains, as evidence of the church, the carved bezel that overlooked the entrance door. I have searched a lot, but I have not had the luck of seeing it. Unless the unknown informant was referring to a square image with a man's head that appears on the wall of a house at the end of the straight part o
